SMITHVILLE, MO (KCTV) -

Long before he started a restaurant, Dan Ulledahl earned his "chops" in the barbecue world with a new kind of barbecue injector.

The former Kansas City Police Department officer had always dreamed of a brick-and-mortar place of his own. This weekend, his dream was supposed to become a reality. Chop's BBQ was going to have its grand opening this week, and his place in downtown Smithville was supposed to be packed.

But this week, a fire caused by a bad latch on his smoker destroyed the back of his new restaurant. Inside there is so much smoke damage that he'll have to rebuild.

Ulledahl insurance company will pay for renovations to the inside, but the restaurant is asking for help to truly rebuilding the restaurant.

Luckily, a community is rallying around Ulledahl and helping him clean up the mess. A Go Fund Me page has raised more than $4,000 so the barbecue restaurant can keep paying some of its staff to help.

With a little luck and a lot of help, the chef is hopeful and believes he can finally live out his dream before the end of October.
