Authorities investigating ‘flammable substance’ found at high school on Thursday

SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

Lisa Gruman, Shawnee Mission Northwest High School’s principal, sent an email on Friday to parents about an incident that happened on Thursday.

According to Gruman’s email, a small amount of a something flammable and most likely homemade was found in a trashcan outside the high school around 10:45 a.m.

The Shawnee Police Department and Shawnee Mission School District Police immediately began an investigation. That investigation was containing as of Friday morning.

The principal’s statement continues:

“Student and staff safety is a top priority, and any person or action that poses a safety concern is taken seriously and appropriate consequences, in accordance with district policies and the law, will be imposed.  Due to the ongoing investigation, the district cannot provide additional information, and the Johnson County District Attorney’s office will handle all further inquiries or statements.”
