LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

High schoolers in Lawrence will soon have access to free condoms at the school nurse's office.

Condoms will be given out at Free State High School and Lawrence High School after the school district's board of education approved the move on Monday.

The Lawrence Douglas County Health Department says right now, 28 percent of teens are sexually active in Kansas.

Of those sexually active teens, 43 percent of those teens do not use protection.

"All of the research supports that increased access to condoms does not increase sexual activity amongst youth," said Michael Showalter of the Lawrence Douglas County Health Department. "All it does is increase use of condoms when they choose to have sex."

Studies show more condom availability is helpful.
