OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

Multiple car fires inside a parking garage at KU Medical Center have caused the garage to be evacuated and have closed roads in the area.

Crews responded to a call of multiple car fires in a staff garage at the hospital about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Five vehicles have been destroyed and at least three others have been damaged as a result of the fires.

Fire crews say the fire started in one car and spread to the others.

KU Med and fire crews have asked the remaining staff to remove their vehicles until a structural engineer can arrive and assess the damage to the garage.

Crews shut down Olathe Street while they clear the area and assess the damage. Hours after the fire, you could still smell in the area.

Mark Scott had his car in the garage during the fire. Luckily, his car was spared from damage.

"I'm just happy no one was hurt," Scott said.

There are no concerns about safety following the fire, but a structural engineer is being brought in to take a second look.
