TONGANOXIE, KS (KCTV) -

The Tonganoxie Public Library is hoping to expand after the librarian says it's in dire need of repair.

The city's library is more than just a building full of books. The library board says it is a place where the community gathers, and that is why the board is asking for funds to help them expand.

But instead of raising taxes, they want to use a 3/4 cent tax that has been funding the local swimming pool. It's set to expire in a year.

“We'd like to renew that and have the next 10 years as an option to pay for a library that will serve us for 25 plus years,” library board president Megan Garren said.

The board is proposing a new 9,000-square foot building to house more books, more computers and more community meetings paces.

The town's population has more than doubled in the 25 years since the library was built. The head librarian says it's time for the building to grow with the town.

“It's more than just a library. It's hope for our future that kids can come in here and learn this technology,” library director Nicole Holifield said.

If the city council approves it, the tax will go on ballots in the spring.
