KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

For years, it was an eyesore, but a revitalization effort is in full swing at 47th Street and Mission Road.

The newest businesses in the area are bringing jobs and attracting more foot traffic.

One year ago, it was an area in transition and there was hope that new businesses would take flight.Today, those major renovations are complete and business is better than it has been in quite some time.

Many locals remember it as Fairway North. Leaders from Kansas City, KS, Roeland Park, and Westwood were focused on bringing new development to the corridor for more than 15 years. Now the NorthWood Shopping Center, the complex is revamped with new additions.

Madison Loughlin is the general manager of Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. The Tennessee-based eatery is one of three businesses added to the complex just within the last year.

“The places that are coming in are really stepping into their own here and are a part of it,” Loughlin said.

Lane4 Property Group put in 1889 Pizza Napoletana and Sole Patch Men’s Shop to help make NorthWood Shopping Center a destination people want to come to.

“It’s fun to see the community grow from the inside,” Loughlin said.

Loughlin doesn’t only notice the benefit on the business side of things; she’s also lived right around the corner for years and has seen real change.

“There was a lot of graffiti covered up in the back of the building,” Loughlin said. “This particular lot used to be pretty high for crime rates, for a lot of things that we’re not having to deal with anymore.”

“I feel like we found our spot,” she said. “We found our home here. We found our home here for Gus’s and we found our home here in the community.”

While the complex is doing well, there is still space up for lease, leaving more room for potential growth.
