KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Volunteers picked up their paint brushes and helped make Kansas City Neighborhood Academy sparkle on Saturday.

“People really are committed and want to link arms with the residents of this neighborhood to really make a difference,” said Robin Henderson, principal of the school.

Kansas City Neighborhood Academy is a new school that opened in August. Now, Truman Medical Centers is stepping in to help spruce it up as part of Project Sparkle.

More than 80 volunteers from Truman came out Saturday to paint and garden. They know that if they want to make a difference, they have to venture outside their four walls.

“We also know that education is key because the number one determinant of your health status is your economic status, and the number one determinant of your economic status is your level of education,” said Charlie Shields, president and CEO of Truman Medical Centers.

That’s why they were making sure the school sparkles inside and out.

“Our school and our partners with the Urban Neighborhood Initiative are really committed to helping to be a part of revitalizing the Wendell Phillips neighborhood,” said Henderson.

And what better way to boost a neighborhood than to invest in its children?

The new school serves pre-K through 2nd grade. They will add a new grade each year until they get to 6th grade.
