A man has been killed after he and his Uber ride were hit on the side of the interstate.

Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, a black Cadillac Escalade was taking a 25-year-old man to Lenexa when he told the Uber driver he was going to vomit. The driver then pulled off onto the right shoulder of westbound I-435 at 103rd Street.

The man got out of the backseat and was standing just outside the back door when a white Volkswagen left the roadway, headed toward the right shoulder. It then hit both the Cadillac and the man.

The Volkswagen tumbled through the trees and landed on its roof down in the ditch of the ramp to 103rd Street.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volkswagen was the only person in that car. Both that driver and the Uber driver were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Information about what caused the Volkswagen to leave the roadway and an identification of the man killed have not been provided to the public by Kansas City police at this time.
