One dead, two arrested in Independence shooting

Posted: Updated:

One man is dead and two are in custody after an overnight shooting and standoff in Independence.

Police responded around midnight to a call of an armed robbery in the parking lot of a Walgreen's on 22nd and Sterling. Responders found a man who had been shot in the parking lot. The man later died at the hospital, police said.

The investigation led police to an apartment complex a few blocks down the road, near Winner and Sterling, where police arrested two men following an hours-long standoff. Police took one man into custody quickly. They said they took in the second suspect early this morning after he eventually gave himself up.

More than a dozen officers were involved, and they had to bring in their tactical team and armored vehicles.

Officer John Syme with Independence police said, "Bringing out a tactical unit might be alarming to people by it's there to protect the officers and protect the people who are here. This is an apartment complex. There are other people who live there. And the safety of them is our priority at that point."

Police also used K-9 units to track down the suspects.
