KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

If you've ever visited the main location for KC Pet Project near the stadiums, you know the facility is less than adequate.

That will soon change if the Kansas City Council gets its way.

The current KC Pet Project on Raytown Road was built in 1972  -- and it is simply far too small to adequately care for the 10,000 animals that pass through here each year.

"If we're not willing to take care of our animals, then we're not doing some other things that take care of people, so it's important to take care of the least of us in all instances," Kansas City Mayor Sly James said.

It won't happen overnight and it's likely that private and public money will be needed to make it happen.

The estimated price tag is $17 million.
