TOPEKA, KS (KCTV) -

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has put three Kansas lakes under warning status:

  • Milford Reservoir (All Zones) in Clay, Dickinson and Geary Counties
  • Overbrook City Lake in Osage County
  • South Lake (Overland Park) in Johnson County

A public health warning means “activities like boating and fishing may be safe; however, direct contact with water (i.e., wading, skiing and swimming) is strongly discouraged for people, pets and livestock.”

Avoid contact and keep pets away if there is scum or a paint-like surface on the water, or if the water is bright green. Those are indications that a harmful bloom may be present.
