INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A 16-year-old was shot and killed in Independence Monday afternoon.

Javon Reilly, 16, was shot minutes after school ended Monday.

Reilly was a student at Van Horn High School.

The shooting happened behind the school at South Home Avenue near Truman Road in Independence. It occurred just 17 minutes after school let out at Van Horn High School.

According to the Independence School District, additional counselors will be made available at Van Horn High School.

KCTV5's Betsy Webster spoke to Reilly's mother Monday evening.

Her son died just three minutes after she pulled into the hospital parking lot. She has yet to be able to see him in person.

"My son didn't sell drugs," Jackie Reilly said. "My son wasn't out there robbing places. My son was trying to get an education."

Reilly's mom says the teen was passionate about his style - and sports.

"Basketball and football every day," she said. "He came home stinking. But I was glad."

Police say someone shot him as he walked, at about 2:40 pm. Witnesses KCTV5 spoke with saw two young men, one with a gun, run north up Home Avenue, then round a corner.

Soon after, one saw a burgundy car round the same corner in the opposite direction.

Jackie Reilly still doesn't know why or how she'll get through being without him.

"My heart feels like it just got pulled out of my body," she said. "It does. Hopefully, I find it back one day."

If you have any information about this case, call the TIPS Hotline 816-474-8477.
