JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

In the aftermath of explosions in New York and New Jersey, along with a mass stabbing in Minnesota, Johnson County Emergency Management will practice its response to a terrorist attack.

Elected officials will meet Monday evening to talk with emergency crews about their response in the event of an attack.

Overland Park, Leawood, Mission Hills, Olathe and Johnson County Community College will be participating in a simulated terrorist attack on Wednesday.

It's part of emergency preparedness month, but the practice is even more important considering last weekend's events.

"Doing it through the course of the day allows people to block that day off and really get into their roles as a responder in the emergency operations center," said Trenton Pittman, assistant director of Johnson County Community Preparedness.

Former Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said the trend of lone wolf attacks is concerning.

"You have to understand the philosophy behind it," Douglass said. "They're looking to create a terrorism event, which means mass casualty and shock. And shock value."

In 2015, an apparent lone wolf attack was stopped in the metro area. A Florida man was arrested for allegedly planning to bomb a September 11 Memorial Stair Climb in downtown Kansas City.

More than 80 people will be participating in the event.
