KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A police department is helping ease the pain of a KCK widow whose home was recently broken into.

The thieves took an irreplaceable police medal awarded to her late husband. Now, the department has stepped up to help.

“It had been ripped out. They didn't even just take it. They ripped the medal off and took it,” said Diana Whittington.

Three weeks ago, thieves snatched a medal honoring Whittington’s late husband.

Tim Whittington worked as a security analyst with the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Police Department.

In 2003, he died in a car crash while driving to the job that he loved. While it’s obvious to anyone, he deserved that medal.

Its sentimental value is likely most understood by the BNSF police.

When Chief Deputy Kevin Anderson got word of the story he wanted to make it right and got to work tracking down a new medal.

For Diana Whittington, the rarity of the medal has always been symbol of her husband’s hard work.

“It means the world to me,” she said.

Tim Whittington was known for his passion and dedication to the job. So out of all people, perhaps it’s fitting, he would manage to earn that medal twice.

Anderson said he wasn’t even aware that such a medal had ever been issued in the metro area. He said it is a huge honor.

As for the burglary, there were thousands of dollars of other goods taken.

Diana Whittington says no arrests have been made, but out of everything taken, she’s just happy she has the medal back.
