Families of quintuple murder victims left with broken hearts, questions

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

The murder of four people in Kansas City, KS, and another in Montgomery County, MO, means four families are living through a nightmare full of questions and broken hearts.

"He was a great man, he loved his children, he would help anybody out in a time of need," said Megan Capps, Michael Capps’ sister.

Megan Capps tries to put into words the kind of man her brother was.

"This is a great loss to our family. He had two small boys that are going to be left without a father," she said.

The murder victim’s two little boys are three and seven years old. While he was divorced from their mother, the two raised the boys together.

Megan Capps said her brother went over to his ex-wife's house at night to read the boys bedtime stories. The boys, she says, were his world.

“I just don't understand why senseless acts of violence happen. He was just sitting at his house, not hurting anybody," she said.

Pablo Antonio Serrano-Vitorino, 36, was Michael Capps' next door neighbor.

Sources say it appears he walked into Michael Capps’ house at South 36th and Oliver streets in KCK Monday night and opened fire.

Al Venbebber was friends with Michael Capps. The news of the killing hit hard and he wants justice, however it comes.

“When somebody can do crimes like that, there shouldn’t be no court. He was guilty. It would stop a lot of killings. A lot of people don’t agree with that, but I’m a firm believer in the old way,” he said. "It's tragic. They got little kids. It's not right, not even close, that people act this way anymore."

Clint Harter and his brother Austin were also murdered. The fourth victim hasn’t been identified.

Neighbors said Clint Harter had a little girl and his wife is expecting their second child soon.

"He'd walk out with so much pride when he had that little girl in his arms. He loves his little girl and she was a daddy's girl!" neighbor Audrey Regan said.

Regan said her mother has lived next door to Clint Harter for several years and they were perfect neighbors. She said they were always willing to lend a hand with her mother who has dementia and always greeted them with a smile.

Ruth Harter, Clint’s wife, is eight months pregnant. The mother must now raise her two-year-old daughter and her baby without her husband.

“He is loving. He is a great father,” she said of her husband. “All I ask is for prayers. That’s all I want from everybody. I appreciate everything that everyone is doing for us.”

Family members are struggling to understand the senseless killing of the brothers.

“I hope he is remembered as loving, caring and always there,” said their sister, Alicia Harter.

They said Tuesday was the birthday of the brother’s mother and, instead of celebration, it is filled with pain.

"If I hadn't left and come back, I'd have been the one in the driveway," Rusty Snow said.

Friends of the KCK victims are trying to make sense of things.

"What was said enough in the 15 minutes I was gone for him to go inside and get an AK-47?" Snow said.

After the four were shot, Serrano-Vitorino allegedly got into a truck and drove east on Interstate 70 to Montgomery County. Police found his truck near the town of New Florence, MO, about 170 miles from the metro.

Another man was found dead there. The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the man killed at his home as Randy Nordman.

“My condolences go to all the rest of the families and the victim in Missouri,” Ruth Harter said.

All of the victims’ families want the same thing – justice.

“It is very important. We want justice for our girls, for our family and for myself of course,” Ruth Harter said.

Family members are planning a vigil and two funerals.

Police and sheriff’s deputies continue to look for Serrano-Vitorino. He has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder.
