KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The first baby born in Kansas City in 2016 is a boy.

Anna and Josh Bubeck welcomed their son, Brecken, to the world at 12:22 a.m. Friday in the Fetal Health Center at Children’s Mercy Hospital. He weighed 5.12 pounds.

"We weren't expecting this day to be like this at all," Anna Bubeck said.

Brecken has gastroschisis, which means his intestines formed outside of his body. He was taken into surgery not long after he was born. He is currently getting the expert care he needs in Children’s Mercy’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Doctors say his prognosis is good.

Brecken's parents knew he would be born with his internal organs formed outside his body, but they thought they had another week before he was born. They had even booked a Country Club Plaza hotel room for New Year's Eve.

But they never left the hospital. A Thursday morning checkup showed their new child would make an early arrival.

"I was like, 'OK, here we go,'" Anna Bubeck said. "This is the perfect way to go into the new year, with hopes and outlooks and everything about that," Anna Bubeck said.

Babies are not usually born at children’s hospitals, but Children’s Mercy’s Fetal Health Center allows families to deliver at the same hospital where their babies will get the care they need immediately, while keeping the family at the same hospital. Children’s Mercy’s Fetal Health Center delivered its 500th baby this summer.

Brecken's doctors and parents knew he would need care right away.

"It is a shocking, special day, and he's a special baby," Josh Bubeck said.

Brecken was just one of many babies entering the world with the new year. At Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Anyeli Arguijo delivered her son, Jayren, at 2:50 a.m. Friday.

"It was the most exciting day I've ever had, because I had him on New Year's. It was special," Arguijo said.

The first babies of 2016 bring a special joy for new parents and their caretakers.

"The birth of a child is a miracle in itself. To start the new year with something so miraculous is fun, and it lifts people's spirits," said Ashley Aul, a nurse at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
