KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

For veterans returning from combat, adjusting to life back home can be difficult.

Sean Quinlan knows that all too well.

"It was tough reintegrating," the Lee's Summit man said. "Coming from an environment where people are trying to harm you each and every day."

Quinlan is a combat Army veteran who served in Iraq. He has found calm through War Horses for Veterans, a foundation in Stilwell, KS.

The program flies in combat veterans and gives them therapy through horseback riding- expense free.

"Horses don't judge. You literally get lost in the aspect of working with the horses," said Patrick Benson, director of War Horses of Veterans. "It kind of allows you to let your guard down a little bit."

Benson is a fellow combat veteran. Each month, the foundation hosts small groups for veterans. It has been so successful, the program plans to double in size.

War Horses for Veterans also helps vets network and find career opportunities. The program is putting on a 5K at the Liberty Memorial at 9 a.m. Sunday.
