OAK GROVE, MO (KCTV) -

Kirstin Stallings dreamed of being a mother, but the Grain Valley woman was unable to have sex with her husband.

"I don't know many men who would stick with a marriage for nine years without having sex a single time," she told KCTV5's Carolyn Long.

The problem was simple. Intercourse was too painful.

Through it all, her husband, Chris, stuck with her.

"I married my wife. To be intimate is a bonus," he said. "But, really it's a small portion of the day."

Kirstin and Chris pursued every option, again and again. They were told it was all in Kirstin's head, that she just needed to relax, but nothing worked.

She says the shame was overwhelming.

"I hid from it for a while," she said.

After nine long years, they found help at Foundational Concepts Specialty Physical Therapy, the only place in the region that specializes in pelvic floor dysfunction.

Quite often, it's the muscles that are not able to relax to have intercourse," Sarah Dominguez told KCTV5.

Dominguez is one of the Foundational Concepts owners. She said 40% of women experience extreme pain with sex, and for 90% of them, it's due to pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.

Within a few months of starting her treatment, Kirstin was pregnant with a little girl.

"That was really nice to get answers," she said.

And the Stallings hope to add to their young family.

"I am excited to have another sibling for her eventually."

In collaboration with the University of Kansas Hospital, Foundational Concepts treats women between the ages of 18 and 90 for this..

They say up to 80% of women will have pelvic floor dysfunction at some point in their lifetime.

Other signs include constipation, pain while sitting and leaking urine.
