JACKSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

Kansas City couple Paul Osgood and Jerry Cundiff have been together for 39 years. Legally, a partnership had been as far as they could go.

It's only been within the last several months that in Jackson County, the two could get married.

The couple is now waiting for their December wedding at Country Club Congregational United Church of Christ.

Last Friday when the Supreme Court ruling made same-sex marriage legal across the country, Osgood said the decision to legalize gay marriage was something that needed to happen.

"We've lived through the time when we've seen a death with a couple and the other family comes in and just takes all the stuff. There's no protection for that person," said Osgood.

On both sides of the state line, courthouses are waiting to accept all marriage applications, regardless of if the couple is same sex or not.

The Johnson County courthouse in Kansas and the Clay, Cass and Platte County courthouses in Missouri are ready to pass out the marriage application. This time, with no distinction on which couples are same sex.

"That's because our relationships are equal with all other relationships," Osgood said. "We are no longer second-class citizens. Our love and our relationships are no longer second class."

Cundiff has an important acknowledgement for the special segment of the LGBTQ community.

"It may not make a difference to us, but we want it to make a difference to the younger generation coming after us," Cundiff said.
