Exercise for new moms incorporates strollers, kids

JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

It can be tough for just about anyone to get a better body, but with a new baby at home, that task gets even harder.

That's why moms across the city are getting together with their kids to stay healthy and blow off some steam. If anyone stops by Roe Park any Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning they'll hear the sounds of a different kind of workout with strollers.

“It gives you more energy to get through the rest of the day. It helps strengthen your body and give you the extra push you need,” said Meredith Paranjothi, a Fit4Mom instructor.

Her Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre classes in north Johnson County help expecting and new moms stay healthy with a mix of cardio, strength training and flexibility exercises.

“It's never a competition. This targets where you are each day,” Paranjothi said.

All of the exercises are geared toward a mom's body and it's all judgement free.

“Who knows who slept last night, who remembered to eat breakfast, who had a cup of coffee, who didn't. We all have different energy levels and capabilities each and every day,” Paranjothi said.

The workout is just the beginning, though. The moms aren't just sweating it out together; the group has become a support system.

“They're wonderful. My best friends are in Stroller Strides,” Participant Caryn Bracken said.

“You have a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen to you,” Paranjothi said. “I say we're like a support group that gets to exercise together.”

Maybe the most important thing, according to the moms, is the message they're sending to their little ones who take part at the end of the class.

“Every time I put on a pair of running tights or put my hair up in a ponytail Beau thinks we're going to go exercise and be healthy,” Bracken said.
