A Sherwood Cass R-8 elementary school teacher is under investigation for an inappropriate relationship with a student.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office and the school district are investigating the allegations of sexual misconduct. The woman has been placed on administrative leave.
A family member of the boy reported the claim to authorities, the Cass County Sheriff's Office said.
Family members for the teacher and the boy declined comment Thursday, but it's certainly the talk of the small community.
"I think it's atrocious and needs to be addressed," said Janet Schnorf, who is a parent.
"It's absolutely insane," said parent Gretchen Harter.
The student's family member contacted authorities on Feb. 2.
Parents said they hope the investigation determines the truth.
"How many others are out there?" Harter said. "They are suppose to be there for an education and not that education."
The school district posted the following statement on its Facebook page:
Allegations involving staff misconduct have recently been brought to our attention. Although the district is prohibited from publicly discussing matters involving identifiable students and/or staff, it wants to assure its patrons and the public that ensuring the safety and security of its students is its highest priority. The district is committed to take all reasonable measures to ensure the safety of our students and will continue to do so. The district takes all allegations of staff misconduct seriously, and when such allegations are involved, it is standard procedure to place the involved staff on paid administrative leave pending any investigation. The district is committed to investigating such allegations promptly and thoroughly, and consistent with adopted board policies that govern staff conduct and provide procedures for the investigation of such allegations.
