GARDEN CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A grandfather is feared dead after a fire at his home in Cass County, MO.

Garden City firefighters were called just after 7 a.m. to a home in the 34000 block of East 355th Street. They recovered a man's body Tuesday afternoon.

The home is a complete loss and authorities continue to investigate what happened. It and the resulting death has left those who grew up in the city in shock.

"We were raised here. Me, my brother and sister," said Donald Shelton of his grandfather's home.

But Milton Huggins' home for the past 20 years is now gone after it was destroyed by the fire. Shelton said he had just visited the home he had many great times as a kid on Monday.

"This was like a second home to us," he said.

Authorities say Huggins was inside at the time of the fire. They sent cadaver dogs to look for a body and found one in the living room, but did not confirm if it was Shelton's grandpa.

"We're in shock more than anything," said Darlene Ott of the news of her grandfather. "We were raised here. Half of our life we were raised here."

"We're hoping without a doubt that he's wandered off. He's wandered off before not knowing where he was at,” Shelton said.

If Huggins is still alive, Shelton has a message for the 71-year-old.

"Come home, come home. We're worried about you,” Shelton said.

"Our concern was him, with him losing his wife of 25 to 28 years. He's been our only Grandpa ever since we were little," Ott said.

Huggins' stepson was also inside the home at the time of the fire. He survived by jumping out of a second-story window. The stepson does not have any injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, but do not believe it was arson.
