Firefighters rescue dog that fell through ice

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A dog and her owner had quite a scare in east Kansas City Thursday morning after the pup found herself on thin ice and in need of a rescue.

With her cell phone rolling, Gala Lee captured the icy rescue as she watched helplessly from the shore of Riss Lake, located at Whispering Lake Apartments near East 43rd Street and Pitman Road.

“First reaction, shock. Then I had to help so I called 911,” Lee said.

Autumn belongs to a household with a large yard across the lake from Lee's apartment. Lee said she had been out walking her own dog when she came across her neighbor's. She said the two dogs began playing and soon after that Autumn ran onto the melting ice covered lake to chase geese and get a drink.

That's when Autumn fell through the ice. Horrified, Lee said she tried to walk out onto the ice herself to rescue the dog.

“I tried, but that's the first reaction you do when you see something that needs help,” she said.

Unable to find a way to rescue Autumn safely, Lee called 911.

The dog was trapped in the water for more than an hour. By the time rescuers with the Kansas City Fire Department got to her, she could barely walk.

Autumn's owner, Deborah Demoss, was inside watching her grandchildren and didn't hear the rescue effort.

“You can't really hear that much once you're inside,” she said.

But she's relieved and thankful that Lee helped her four-legged friend.

“I'm glad to have my dog back. Thank you to everyone who came out and help,” Demoss said.

Lee said helping was just an innate reaction.

“I don't want to be a witness of somebody dying, whether it's a dog or a bird. You just want to help,” she said.

The rescue crew took Autumn to animal control to wait for her owners and warm up. Autumn is being treated for hypothermia. She returned home  Thursday afternoon.
