Desperate I-435 driver frantically sought help as car broke down

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Joshua Hutchinson was sleeping when his fiance desperately called him on Saturday evening.

His wakening hours are now haunted by those missed calls by Shante Hopkins, 24. Their three children, Hopkins and a close friend were killed when a semi plowed into the back of the stalled car on Interstate 435.

Witnesses said that Hopkins' Mazda Protege had been crawling at just a few miles per hour before stopping in traffic on I-435 near Eastwood Trafficway.

Hutchinson's phone registered seven missed calls from "Baby Momma," and he is wracked by guilt.

"At that time, she was calling me to let me know she was stuck on the highway. She needed me you know? She needed my help at the time," he said.

Kansas City police investigators are working to determine whether Hopkins' car had a catastrophic mechanical failure or she ran out of fuel.

Drivers say there is limited shoulder in this stretch of the interstate and one witness said that Hopkins appeared to be trying to get to the exit.

Also killed in the crash were Ja Riah, 2, Ja Nijah, who would have turned 2 years old in February, and 7-month-old Tay Shawn, and 17-year-old Dominique Johnson, who was dating Hopkins' brother.

"My heart is cold right now. I just need as much time as I can to be able to heal," Hutchinson said.

He is left shaken by the events of the weekend.

"I'm still heartbroken. There's nothing I can do right now. I can barely eat, sleep. I am scared to drive anywhere," he said.

He is drawing on his faith and the support of his family and friends to get through these difficult days.

"I don't blame God. I didn't say, 'God, why?' I'm a Christian man and I know God does stuff for a reason," Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson and his family said they are praying for the truck driver and the families of Hopkins and Johnson.

The grieving family also is cherishing memories of the three children laughing and playing as a family during the holidays.

"I just remember them running around and me kissing and hugging them," Hutchinson said. "They were the best kids in the world."

Funeral arrangements for the five are pending.
