KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The owner of an Italian restaurant was beaten up and robbed while he was opening his Westport business Tuesday morning.

Authorities are searching for the gunman, but haven't released a detailed description of the suspect yet.

The Cupini's owner was opening his store about 7:30 a.m. at 1809 Westport Rd when he was attacked. Police said the owner, who is about 70 years old, will be OK.

The suspect apparently walked to the store. After the attack, the suspect hailed a cab. The driver, who was unaware of the crime, dropped the man off in Midtown.

Police said are looking for the suspect, who they described as a black man who is about 6' tall and was wearing a hoodie. Additional details weren't provided.

"I think he's a chicken. I think assaulting an older person is horrible and this suspect is a creep and needs to go to jail," said Kansas City Police Department Capt. Mark Terman.

Authorities believe this was a crime of opportunity. The suspect stole money from the restaurant and the victim's wallet.
