Kansas City police officer shoots suspect outside grocery store

Posted: Updated:

A Kansas City police officer is in the hospital after being dragged by the vehicle of a woman who the officer later shot. This occurred Friday night outside a grocery store in northeast Kansas City.

The shooting occurred about 8:05 p.m. Friday near Independence and Topping avenues. The woman allegedly tried to run the officer over. The officer was injured while being dragged by the suspect's vehicle, police said.

The officer was able to shoot the woman at one point.

Both the officer and the woman were at area hospitals Friday night, but police said both will be OK.

Marisa Alvarez witnessed the chaotic series of events. She said the officer had the door open and the woman was driving into oncoming traffic and tried to jump out of her vehicle.

This unfolded in the parking lot of the Price Chopper at 5800 Wilson Ave. An assistant store manager said crime tape was up about 200 yards from the store's entrance. At least one customer saw their buggy with their purchases in bags become part of the crime scene.

The store employee said the store remained open Friday night and customers were allowed to come and go. However, customers used the west exit since the shooting occurred on the store's east side.

The officer had stopped the vehicle and the driver pulled over in the Price Chopper parking lot.

Kansas City police Capt. Tye Grant said a man in the passenger seat jumped out and fled during the initial interaction with the officer.

The officer was able to get the woman driving the vehicle out and got one ring of a handcuff on her. With the handcuff dangling, the woman was able to wrench herself free from the officer and get back in the vehicle.

The officer got caught in the door as the woman took off. Grant said the officer was hanging onto the vehicle as the woman drove around the large Price Chopper parking lot and managed to get into traffic on Wilson Avenue before the officer fired his service weapon.

The woman then crashed the vehicle after traveling several blocks with the officer hanging out the door. The officer fired his weapon more than one time.

Police were still searching for the male passenger Friday night.
