LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -

A fire has damaged a large home in Lenexa.

The fire started shortly before 2 p.m. Monday in the 8400 block of Maplewood Lane, in a neighborhood just north of West 87th Street and west of Quivira Road.

An automatic alarm initially notified the Lenexa Fire Department, but shortly after that there was a 911 call.

When crews arrived on the scene, flames and heavy smoke were showing from the roof of the two-and-a-half story home.

A woman, her 8-year-old son, and a dog were all able to get out of the home safely.

At one point, the fire department had to fight the fire in a defensive mode. The fire was called under control just after 3:30 p.m.

Firefighters say the fire originated on the second floor of the home, but the cause is under investigation.

The home sustained extensive fire and water damage. The family will not be able to stay in the home.
