KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Family and friends of a teenager who may have been the victim of a hate crime came together on Saturday to remember him.

A funeral was held for 15-year-old Abdisamad (Abdi) Sheik Hussein at the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City. Abdisamad, known as Adam to his friends, was killed Thursday night while standing outside the Somali Center of Kansas City, the mosque where he had just come from worshipping.

Abdisamad's death is a terrible blow to the Islamic community in Kansas City. On Saturday many came together to support each other in this time of tragedy.

The man leading the prayer and blessing of Abdisamad's body was his father, Abdu Llahi, who is also the imam at the mosque where Abdisamad was leaving on Thursday. The funeral drew hundreds of men and women from Kansas City's Islamic community, but also Abdisamad's friends from Staley High School.

“Adam was such a nice person and he had to go early,” high school friend Nick Roche said.

It was the largest burial ceremony Mustafa Hussein, the service manager for the Islamic Center, has ever seen there. He said Abdisamad practiced his religion faithfully, memorizing entire passages of the Quran.

“As a young 15-year-old, memorizing the whole Quran is an accomplishment for him and his family,” Hussein said.

Many offered their prayers in advance of the funeral. Hussein said the entire community wants to offer spiritual and moral support to Abdisamad's family.

“It's like an intercession for us to God to make the person who passed away gain forgiveness and grant them a place in heaven,” he said.

Many want justice for the young man who they say died far too soon. His friends say Abdisamad had a very promising future.

“He would have made a big impact on the world. The way he acted around people was so mature,” Roche said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now working with local police to look into the possibility that Abdisamad's death was the result of a hate crime. That process could take some time.

Ahmed H. Aden, 34, faces charges of first-degree murder, armed criminal action, leaving the scene of an accident and unlawful use of a weapon.
