LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV/AP) -

More than 20 dogs were rescued from a pet care business that caught on fire in Lawrence.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical officials said that the electrical fire was reported early Saturday at a strip mall.

But the release said that as crews investigated, they encountered dense smoke and fire inside Christal K-9, which provides dog grooming and boarding services.

The release says 22 dogs were rescued from the building, but at least one would die. Fire-medical crews, veterinarians, bystanders and others revived the dogs using canine resuscitation masks donated to the department in October by the Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America.

The department says the dogs were later taken to area veterinary clinics. Those in the worst condition were later taken to emergency vets in the Kansas City area, and several remain in critical condition.

One vet broke down in tears after dealing with the fire's aftermath.

Clinton Parkway Animal Hospital's Dr. Gary Olson, who helped treat the injured animals, said he and his staff are devastated especially for the dogs' families.

"I've been here 40 years," he said. "I don't ever recall having this type of situation. And I hope I never see it again."

He said the community needs to come together to support the animals and their families. He said the owners of Christals are devastated.

"They're there because they love animals and have a unique facility. They're just devastated," he said.
