Friends maintain woman didn't toss dog off balcony

Posted: Updated:

Kim Bonds is still waiting for her day in court, but friends say she did not throw her small dog off a third-floor balcony.

Instead, they say a vehicle hit Roadrunner, and police haven't interviewed a key witness.

Many angry Kansas City residents are urging prosecutors to up the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony. Bonds was scheduled to be in court on Monday, but it was delayed. If convicted in municipal court, she faces $1,000 fine and 180 days in jail.

While many on social media say that's not enough for the pain that Roadrunner endured, Gary Conner insists that a vehicle hit the dog.

"I seen right when the car impacted him. I thought he was gone," Conner said.

He said he raced to the dog and pulled him from the street. He said police haven't interviewed him about what he said.

Bonds has said she has dealt with verbal abuse from neighbors and death threats on her Facebook page. She maintains she was taking Roadie and her other dog, Pearl, to the park when Roadie got away from her and ran into the street.

"It's a shame when people will (pass) judgement on me when they weren't there to see what happened," she said.

She said a dispute with her neighbor led to him making up the claim that she tossed the dog from the balcony. Her boyfriend, Daryl Doron, agreed.

"This neighbor next door is a troublemaker," he said. "This has went too far. It's went viral. Kim is not an animal abuser."

The Tibetan spaniel lost his eyes due to the trauma. He is now with a foster family, and Kansas City Pet Project is raising funds to pay for his medical care and the therapy he will need to adapt to losing his eyes. Click here to donate.

Bonds said she doesn't want Roadrunner back, saying it would cause even more problems with her neighbors.
