KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Lotto players might soon be thanking their fortune cookie numbers with the help of a new Missouri Lottery promotion launching Monday.

FortuneCookieAdvertising.com will be distributing almost 1 million fortune cookies in over 70 Chinese restaurants throughout Kansas City, St Louis, Springfield, Jefferson City and Columbia. This is the first time the Missouri Lottery has implemented this form of advertising.

In 2005, 110 New York state lottery winners won by playing the lucky numbers in their fortune cookies.

Missouri Lottery officials said they are tapping into this large audience by sponsoring the fortunes and lucky numbers inside the cookies, creating a fun way for players to pick their number for various lottery games.

"The Missouri Lottery is continually searching for fun and innovative ways to reach new players," said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. "What could be more unique than using fortune cookie messages? We're anxious to see how customers respond to this new advertising medium."

Fortune Cookie Advertising CEO Yan Revzin said this type of advertising has been quite successful for the companies that have tried it.

"Studies show that more than 99 percent of fortune cookies are opened and read, a number that is difficult to match with traditional forms of advertising. More than 83 percent of Chinese restaurant patrons find fortune cookies to be effective conversation starters, while 57 percent actually find the fortune cookie slip to be relevant to their lives," Revzin said.

KCTV5 talked to some Kansas City area residents who welcomed the idea. Some already use numbers from fortune cookies when buying lottery tickets. And if they won, paying off bills, helping family, travel and donating charity were popular thoughts.
