Royal George, 34-day-old chimp at Kansas City Zoo, dies

Posted: Updated:

The Kansas City Zoo said Royal George died on Wednesday. The chimpanzee was born on Oct. 16 during the height of the Kansas City Royals playoff run.

George was his mother's first offspring. Teooni is 18 years old, and George's father was to be determined through DNA testing.

“Devoted to ensuring that George was being well cared for, George and his mother were under the close supervision of our professional staff of zoo keepers and veterinarians. The entire zoo staff is saddened by his passing,” zoo officials said in a news release.

In October, Teooni proudly showed off her baby to onlookers. Her twin sister, Teetoo, and mother, Rachel, assisted with the birth. George was born premature.

A necropsy didn't determine the cause of death so additional tests are being performed. Those results should be known in a few weeks.

"The passing of an animal is always very sad for us as well as the entire zoo community. Our commitment to animal welfare and to the staff who provide this care is priority one," Randy Wisthoff, the zoo's CEO, said in a news release.
