Man running for Cass County Clerk being sued by family

Posted: Updated:

A man running for Cass County clerk is being sued.

Michael Vinck is accused of embezzling $240,731.84 from his family's business.

Vinck's brother said the family tried to settle this out of court but when that didn't work, they filed a lawsuit.

Vinck is campaigning to be the next Cass County Clerk. His campaign says he'll bring trust, integrity and respect to the office. But his brother said he embezzled money for years from the family business Eagle Door Supply, Inc.

According to court documents, Vinck is accused of writing more than $34,000 worth of checks to unauthorized vendors, including a down payment on a new Ford truck. He's also accused of writing payments to himself totaling more than $29,000.

KCTV5 tried to contact Vinck at his home and also left a message with his attorney, but haven't heard back from him.

In the civil lawsuit, family members accuse Vinck and his wife of paying themselves duplicate paychecks totaling more than $146,000 and using company credit cards for personal charges adding up to more than $78,000.

Some voters say that if the allegations are true, that would impact their choice at the polls.

“If I went home and researched it and felt like it was credible, I would not vote for that person,” Cass County resident Pat Jurgeson said.

“Until I hear more and know more about it, I couldn't judge,” Cindy Nations said.

According to court documents, Vinck and his wife paid more than $56,000 back to the family company.

The Vinck family members who filed the civil lawsuit are not considering pursuing criminal charges at this time. They declined an on-camera interview.
