End is in sight for Johnson Drive construction

Posted: Updated:

For months people and businesses owners in Mission have been dealing with construction along Johnson Drive.

It started in February and, through cold weather, rain and the heat of summer, the street work has continued.

But now the project between Metcalf and Nall avenues is nearing the end. The city says it's about 85 percent complete and businesses in the area can hardly wait for the final product.

“It's just a relief, people can actually physically drive and come and park in front instead of having the challenge of trying to find someplace else to park," said Sandi Russell of Twisted Sister Coffee Shop.

Russell had started to get used to the construction and accompanying orange cones.

"I've really grown attached to them,” she said.

The barista said business actually picked up as traffic was forced to slow down along the busy street.

“I think we were probably one of the luckier ones because when they started working on the other side of the street, it slowed people down enough that had no idea there was a coffee shop here," Russell said. “That helped us."

Some shops are still hard to get into, but the city said it's entering the final stretch.

“It feels great. Every time another piece of the puzzle falls into place and we move forward, you can really see the vision and where we are headed," said Emily Randel with the city of Mission.

After completed, the city will host a grand opening celebration on Nov. 14 and it says everyone is invited. Instead of having a ribbon cutting, they say they will celebrate by smashing barricades to mark the end of a long period of construction.
