KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Obesity not only runs in humans, but dogs as well.

Being overweight can really take a toll on a canine's health, but a new app hopes to change all that.

Dogs can't talk and don't carry a smartphone. So the developers of FitBark, a tiny, smart activity monitor, created an app that helps dog owners understand their pet's health and behavior.

The monitor's sensors measure dog's movement in all directions. It then sends that signal to a smartphone so their owners know if they are getting activity.

"We count how many hours and minutes of rest, active time and play time your dog is getting," said FitBark CEO Davide Rossi.

Dog owners can check out activity hourly or look at a bar graph comparing one day to another.

Rossi says one big group showing interest has been people using doggie day care or dog walkers. Another group could be people with ailing animals.

"Maybe you want to monitor quality of sleep or a reaction to a life-changing event or a new drug or a new food. We allow you to do it," Rossi said.

Rossi came to Kansas City from Italy by way of New York because he was accepted into the Sprint Accelerator, a program that accepts 10 business plans from around the world.

"Over the course of four weeks when we arrived, we have met over 120 successful entrepreneurs, investors and accomplished folks both from here and the rest of the country who gave us their feedback on what we are doing," Rossi said.

But he decided to stay because of a lesser-known Kansas City claim to fame.

"One of the biggest strategic reasons for us to be here is the Kansas City animal health corridor," he said.

According to Rossi, Kansas City is one of the largest concentration of animal health businesses in the world, from pharmaceuticals to food companies, and is one of the first places where FitBark will start marketing large scale.

FitBark is selling the monitoring device for $99. The app is free.

The company plans to have pre-ordered devices shipped by the end of the month.
