TFD: Tucson toddler drowns in hot tub

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A toddler drowned at an apartment complex on Monte Vista, near Fort Lowell and Columbus, according to Tucson Fire officials.

It only took nine minutes for Tucson Fire crews to get the boy to hospital, but he was pronounced dead on Monday night.

There have been almost a dozen near drownings in Pima County in 2014 and we just wrapped up Drowning Impact Awareness month, but this is the first drowning death in the city of Tucson this year.

TFD said someone called 911 when the toddler was found in the hot tub. First responders arrived in minutes and someone was already in the middle of CPR by then.

One fire captain said CPR can make a difference, but sadly, it wasn't enough tonight.

“CPR is so critical in that three to four minutes before it takes us to get to the scene that that often times can be the difference between life and death,” TFD Capt. Barrett Baker said. “And unfortunately, tonight it still didn't have that impact we wanted.”

Crews said adults were on scene and there's a gate for the pool area so there were different ways in place to prevent this from happening.

Capt. Baker said there's no rewind for this family. Tonight, they're dealing with a tragedy.
