Kansas City mom and daughter's sentimental journey

Posted: Updated:

A lot of special memories have been made at Kansas City's historic Union Station, and Friday night, some new ones are being created.

Call it a trip down memory lane or a step back in time, or both, but it's going to be a special journey for 93-year-old Joan Mindlin and her daughter, Barb Kovacs, as the two return to Mindlin's hometown of Trinidad, CO.

"I've been talking about doing it for a couple of years, and a couple of months ago, I just decided to do it," Kovacs said. "I tracked down the information on the Internet and bought the tickets. I told my mom, "Guess what? You're going home."

The two made the trip to Trinidad, a tiny town on the southern edge of Colorado, just a handful of miles from the New Mexico border, many times when Kovacs was a child. The last time Mindlin boarded the train for home was 1978. With her soon to be 94-year-old mother still in good health, Kovacs decided it was time to make the trip again.

"It's been a very long time. We haven't been back since we buried my grandfather. We're going to visit her childhood home, and her best friend's daughter who lives across the street," Kovacs told KCTV5 News.

The adventure began with mom and daughter having dinner at Union Station, then taking some photos as they explored Kansas City's historic gem, the site of so many important trips through the years.

Kovacs and Mindlin then boarded the train and headed to their sleeper car for the nighttime trip west.

In 1969, for Kovacs' grandfather's 100th birthday, they made the trip and filled an entire train car with family.

Kovacs said her mom's reaction was emotional.

"She cried," Kovacs shared.

Mom and daughter will return home to Kansas City with a whole batch of new and special experiences Monday morning. Union Station will be waiting to receive them as they have so many others through the years.
