Alleged purse snatching leads to chase, crash

Posted: Updated:

Police say a car caught fire after its driver allegedly stole someone's purse, fled from officers and crashed and dash cam video shows the entire thing.

"Oh my," said Penny Haggard, a Gladstone, MO, resident, as she watched video of Thursday night's chase. "This residential area, that's pretty dangerous to be driving 100 mph."

Police were called to the Walmart on North Indiana in Gladstone about 7:30 p.m. Thursday on a report of a purse snatching. Officers tried to stop a vehicle matching the description of the one the suspect left in, but the person inside drove off.

A chase ensued and, after running stop signs and weaving through traffic, police say it ended when the vehicle crashed at U.S. Highway 169 and Northwest 68th Street. The vehicle flipped and caught fire.

Now people like Haggard are questioning when and why law enforcement gets involved in a high-speed chase.

"They need to make the determination whether the risks posed to the public or to themselves outweigh the need to apprehend," said Chief Michael Hasty, the Gladstone director of public safety.

In this case it was a purse snatching.

"It will be up to the prosecutor on what to charge, so I wouldn't want to comment on that, but it's a felony," Hasty said.

Department protocol does permit a car chase under circumstances like robbery and assault, but the facts are still being presented.

"I haven't completed my review of that (if the chase was justified or not). We have a lot of things to look over," Hasty said.

One person was in the vehicle when it crashed and police say they did not suffer serious injuries.

Southbound Highway 169 at 68th Street was temporarily closed and drivers were advised to use an alternate route.
