Water main break knocks out service to downtown businesses

Posted: Updated:

A water main break in downtown Kansas City knocked off service for some businesses.

Jennifer Kincaid with the municipal Water Department said the 8-inch line broke about 5 p.m. in the area of 11th Street and Wyandotte Avenue. The break sent water streaming down Wyandotte.

It wasn't immediately clear how many customers lost service or how long they would be without water.

The cause isn't known. The area where the break occurred has some of the oldest pipes in the city. Kincaid said the area is more prone to breaks.

According to Kincaid, Kansas City had 77 water main breaks so far this August, and is on pace for 99. The city had 100 water main breaks last August. The record number of breaks in August is 316.
