Police: Serial Great Clips hair salon burglar strikes again

Posted: Updated:

A burglar broke into two Shawnee Great Clips hair salons Tuesday, and police say the incidents are related to a recent string of burglaries at various other locations around the Kansas City area.

Authorities say only small amounts of cash have been taken in the crimes.

Workers are stunned by the crime spree.

Shawnee police responded to an alarm about 6 a.m. Tuesday at the salon in the 22400 block of West 66th Street.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the front glass door had been broken out and the business had been burglarized.

A short time later, officers discovered another Great Clips in the 15900 block of West 65th Street also had the front door glass broken out and had been burglarized.

Since June, burglars have broken into 13 Great Clips Hair salons in the Kansas City area, with most of the stores in Johnson County.

In previous cases, the suspect is described as a man, 5'10" to 5'11" tall with a heavy build.

Workers at the Great Clips on 65th Street said they didn't think their store would be hit since they are near a heavily trafficked Walmart.

"Pretty amazed that it happened," Great Clips worker Karen Davis said. "I was like what?"

Shawnee police had stepped up patrols of the Great Clips in the city because of the crime spree. Davis said workers are also trying to stop the crimes.

"We leave the lights on. We leave the cash drawer open. We wouldn't leave the lights on normally," Davis said.

Police are mystified as to why the crooks are targeting hair salons that don't have a lot of cash overnight.

If anyone has any information about the incidents in Shawnee or any of the Great Clips burglaries in the metro area, they are encouraged to call the Shawnee Police Department at 913-631-2150 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
