LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

An armed convenience store clerk told police he was defending the business from a beer thief who was shot in the head early Sunday.

According to an arrest report, 55-year-old Mariano Tejeda-Zuniga was booked into Clark County Detention Center in connection to a shooting that happened about 3:45 a.m. in the 2100 block of Maryland Parkway.

Las Vegas Metro police said officers looked into the incident after receiving a call at about 4 a.m. of a man being admitted to Sunrise Hospital with a gunshot to the head. Two people who were with the wounded person told officers they were at a 7-Eleven store several blocks away from the hospital when the shooting happened.

They said a clerk followed the victim as he was exiting the store and shot him in the head. The victim collapsed but later got up and ran to a vehicle, fleeing the area.

Police then visited the store, where they met with Tejeda-Zuniga.

In documents, Tejeda-Zuniga told officers a theft took place earlier that morning. The clerk also said the merchandise, a case of beer, was recovered with police observing blood stains on the packaging.

Officers also had Tejeda-Zuniga show them where the theft happened, including the parking lot area where they found pieces of flesh and bone and a shell casing on the ground.

Officers were then given permission to view security video of the incident, which showed Tejeda-Zuniga chasing a man out of the store and firing a gun at the person. Tejeda-Zuniga claimed the man walked out with beer without paying for it.

The document stated the man was seen falling to the ground and dropping the beer before recovering and fleeing to a car.

In an interview, Tejeda-Zuniga stated he had bought the handgun from a person for $400. He said his store had been hit by thieves recently and he bought the firearm to scare anyone who may steal from the store.

The document also stated the worker later hid the gun under a stack of cups inside the store because he was scared.

Police said the single shot entered behind the victim's right ear and exited through his face. The document indicated the man survived the shooting but was being treated at Sunrise Hospital.

The document said the gun's registration was traced back to a person who reported the firearm stolen.

Tejeda-Zuniga was booked into Clark County Detention Center on counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen firearm.
