Bacon-Fest 2014 hits town

Posted: Updated:

Everyone knows it's not good for you, yet nearly everyone loves it. On Saturday afternoon, you can get more of it in one place than you'll likely find anywhere. We're talking about bacon, and the event dedicated almost exclusively to it, Bacon-Fest 2014, Kansas City's sixth annual bacon bacchanalia.

"The first year we started, we held it in the West Bottoms and had 300 people turn out. Six years later and we're expecting 2,500," Bacon-Fest Media Coordinator Melissa Saubers said. "Plus, there's another bonus, this is the first year inside Union Station in the air conditioning."

Saubers said Bacon-Fest is going to be a good time, and with four separate contests, and gosh knows how much bacon-based food and beer to wash it all down, how couldn't it be? It's also for a great cause as the money generated goes to the Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City (RIKC).

Bacon-Fest 2014 will be held Saturday afternoon at Union Station. Fourteen local restaurants and vendors will be on hand to serve up samples of creative bacon fare, each vying for the title, Pork Champion. Of course, there will be plenty of adult beverages as well, with four beer stations along with unique bacon drinks. Saubers said all guests will receive a commemorative drink cup in which to enjoy your malted beverage, and the obligatory Bacon-Fest T-shirt.

"This is a bacon-lovers paradise with "everything bacon" for a great cause. The money raised helps children, adolescents and adults. You will not find another event in Kansas City like this," Saubers stated.

One of the more unique aspects of Bacon-Fest, actually, four of them, are the contests. There will be a bacon eating contest, a bacon recipe contests, a bacon-themed T-shirt contest, and the best in sow where vendors will be judged on the awesomeness of their bacon-centric creations.

Last year's "best in sow" winner was Our Sassy Pantry, a Kansas City, Kansas business that does amazing savory, and now sweet, jams. We reached out to see what winning the award meant, and if they'll be back trying to repeat.

"We actually didn't know there was a contest till we got there and started setting up. It was our first event as a company and it was a blast!," said Kay Findlay, one of the two Sassy Pantry owners. So, what about Bacon-Fest 2014? "This year, we'll be serving up mini phyllo dough cups filled with savory cheese and topped with bacon jam as well as bite size pieces of a BLT flatbread pizza. Should be a fun day!," Findlay concluded.

Wow! If the other vendors bring their A-game like that, it most definitely will be a fun, bacon-filled day.

Bacon-Fest 2014 starts at 2 p.m., and wraps up at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Admission is $50 for general admission, $100 for VIP's. The VIP event starts at 1 p.m. Bacon-Fest 2014 is a 21 and over event.
