Local UPS store affected by hack

Posted: Updated:
BRENTWOOD, TN (WSMV) -

UPS is the latest big company to be hacked by criminals.

The UPS Store in Brentwood is one of 51 stores in 24 states where names, addresses, email addresses, and credit and debit card information was compromised.

Officials said the hack began around March and wasn't eliminated until last week.

"It's just scary to me," Brentwood resident Barbara Ingram said.

According to the FBI, crime rings from China, Russia and Nigeria are attacking online computer systems every minute.

"We have to realize the bad guys are writing 200,000 viruses a day and be vigilant," said Special Agent Scott Augenbaum with the FBI.

Augenbaum has watched the recent string of hacks unfold and studied them. He said the crime syndicates are profit centers, transferring millions of dollars before they are caught.

Although many might feel powerless, Augenbaum said you're not.

"One of the things consumers need to do is look at this stuff," he said. "The days of looking at your bank statement once a month are over."

Augenbaum also recommended using a different password for all your online accounts. A single password is too easy for thieves to crack. He recommended 10-character passwords with a number and a symbol.
