KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police officers investigating a burglary went above and beyond to make sure a family stays cool during this hot week.

"It was hot. It was viciously hot, like an oven. It was outrageous," Victoria Johnson said.

Johnson, her four young children and their father have spent the past two weeks without air conditioning.

This comes after thieves broke their AC unit when they broke into their home.

Kansas City police took the report and were worried when the intense heat kicked in.

"We were concerned about how hot it was getting," community interaction officer Jason Coolidge said.

Coolidge checked in on the family Wednesday.

"Just to make sure they're comfortable and make sure temperatures aren't getting too warm in there for them, make sure everyone was safe," he said.

Then, the officers contacted the Bishop Sullivan Center and surprised the family with a brand new window AC unit.

"It's way cooler," Johnson said.

The children's father, Sean Nero, said the gesture gave him and his family hope when they felt they had nowhere to turn.

"We are trying our best for our kids so we're just very happy that there's people out there that care," Nero said.

The Bishop Sullivan Center has a program that gives air conditioners to people in need. If you need help, or if you would like to help out, you can contact the center at 816-231-0984.
