WISE COUNTY, VA (WJHL) -

People from across the nation have donated more than $8,000 to pay off funeral debt and purchase a headstone for a murdered Southwest Virginia girl.

After learning that Emma Baldwin's grave in Covington, Kentucky, had no headstone, Wise County, Virginia Sheriff's Investigators started a fundraising drive.

Lt. Investigator Russell Cyphers said his office has been overwhelmed by the response from people across the United States as far away as California.

"People we've never met, people who aren't from here, heard about Emma and gave," Lt. Cyphers told News Channel 11.

Cyphers said he'll continue to collect donations for a few more days.

Any money left over will be donated to the Children's Advocacy Center in Emma's memory.

Below is an earlier report.

The Wise County Sheriff Office is raising money to purchase a tombstone for Emma Baldwin.

The 2-year-old girl was murdered in October 2012.

Her mother, Brandie Baldwin, and Baldwin's boyfriend, Juwan Moore, are both in prison for the crime.

Almost two years after the death, Wise County Deputies realized Emma had not received a proper burial.

"We went to her grave and found there was just a temporary marker, and it just bothered us," said Lt. Investigator Russell Cyphers.  "Her father tried to make it happen, but the funds ran short."

So Cyphers and his colleagues decided to take action as a tribute to Emma.

"It started out with a few people, and it's really gathered steam," Cyphers said.   "We're getting support from several people and places."

The goal is to raise $2,200, enough for a headstone and to cover outstanding debt from the burial.

The fundraiser started Tuesday.

Anything exceeding the goal will be donated to the Children's Advocacy Center of Wise County in Emma's name.

To donate, send a check.
