INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -
QuikTrip is adding more and more state-of-the-art kitchens to its stores including the new one opening Thursday in Independence.
Customers at the convenience store on Little Blue Parkway just north of Interstate 70 can pick up hot food or head to kiosk to order a fresh pizza, milkshake or pretzel.
"From a business model standpoint, it just made sense since our customers are asking for it, looking for a good food offering. Why not give it to them now?" QT manager Brandon Thompson said.
The kitchens are now at 46 of the 83 locations in the Kansas City area. The company plans to offer the kitchens at every location within the next year.
"I think it's a fantastic idea," Kansas City customer Ellen Neidlinger said.
Prairie Village customer Emily Crafton concurred.
"QuikTrip is my favorite place to get gas. I will go out of my way to get gas here," she said. "So why not have great food at the same time?"
The kitchens compete with fast-food establishments.
"McDonalds and everyone else better watch out. QuikTrip is coming," Mike Whaley of Kansas City said.
Customers seem to like their hot food choices and the quality of the ingredients. QuikTrip says they are doubling their staff at each store. Nick Powell, a corporate chef for QT, said the company really prides itself on listening to its customers.
"It seems like food is really where the interest is," he said.
