FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

A Kansas forensic medical consultant who helped complete a private autopsy of Michael Brown has faced questions about his training and background.

Shawn Parcells, who is based in Johnson County, is managing partner of a consulting firm that helps conduct autopsies.

Parcells has a bachelor of life science and chemistry degree. He is not a licensed pathologist.

Missouri says autopsies must be done by licensed pathologists. But Parcells assisted Michael Baden in performing the autopsy on the 18-year-old who was shot and killed by a Ferguson police officer. The autopsy was done at the behest of the family who didn't trust the autopsy being performed by local authorities.

Missouri doesn't require state training or oversight to assist in autopsies.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch last year questioned Parcells' work in an article titled, "Missouri coroners question practices of forensic company operator."

The coroners said Parcells inflated his qualifications and performed autopsies without a medical license.

The newspaper report delivered a stinging rebuke of Parcells' qualifications.

Dr. Gregory Schmunk, president of the National Association of Medical Examiners, said people should not be sent to prison based on the testimony of someone with no standing as an expert.

"Mr. Parcells can get all the on-the-job training he wants, but until he is properly certified, there is no way that he should be allowed to testify in any court in this land," Schmunk told KCTV5 on Monday.

For his part, Parcells dismisses the criticism.

"That was all blown out of proportion," he said. "Nothing has ever come from any of those allegations. I still have my business and my practice. Everything is on the up and up and legal."
