Better Business Bureau warns about utility phone scam

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A phone scam happening in Ohio and Michigan now has the attention of the Better Business Bureau.

The scammers are posing as utility workers over the phone, saying they are from Toledo Edison or American Electric Power and claiming that last month's bill needs paid, demanding money or they will turn off the electricity.

The BBB says these scams affect businesses as well as residents and some have already fallen victim. Now police and the BBB want you to know this is a scam.

Tene Jackson, with the BBB says scams are now more realistic. She says scams are now everyday things like a utility bill.

"They're smart about what they're doing," said Jackson. "But you just have to be smarter and no anytime anybody ask you to send in anything by money gram or a green dot money card, that right there is your first red flag."

Jackson says if someone calls wanting money it is likely a scam.
