Neighbors on alert for Grain Valley home invaders

Posted: Updated:

A frightening new crime trend is gripping Grain Valley as crooks sneak into homes at night while families are sleeping inside.

Police said three home invasions in a neighborhood in the last week were crimes of opportunity, so officers are warning people to lock their doors before going to sleep.

"It is scary because you don't think that would happen in this type of neighborhood," Denise Lovercamp said.

A security company recently listed Grain Valley as one of the safest cities in Missouri. It ranked 26th out of their top 50. They also called it the safest city in Jackson County.

Lovercamp admits she hasn't always checked every lock at night in her nice, quiet Grain Valley neighborhood.

Now, just the thought of someone in her home while she is sleeping has her checking those locks twice.

"You betcha tight," she said. "I think it is awful. It is scary. It makes you wonder what is going on here."

Police say the crooks come in through unlocked back doors and steal electronics, TVs, laptops, iPads and whatever they can get their hands on quick.

"I feel sorry for the guy who comes in my house," John Shull said.

Shull has a neighbor who got hit in the middle of the night. He locks his doors, but said the crooks better stay away from his house.

"Because I sleep with a gun, and I carry one all the time," he said.

Police said the break-ins are happening in the early morning, about 3 or 4.

If you know anything about these break-ins, call police.
