3 injured in wrong way I-26 crash in Kingsport; names released by THP

Tennessee Highway Patrol released the names of those involved in a crash on Interstate 26 Wednesday night.

According to a THP preliminary report, a Lexus, driven by Mahendra Sharma, 65, of Kingsport, was traveling westbound on the interstate and a Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by Deborah J. Roberts, 61, also of Kingsport, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes.

Roberts reportedly was traveling in the right lane of I-26, but was driving in the wrong direction.

According to the report, Sharma said Roberts' vehicle was coming directly at him and he tried to merge into another lane to avoid a crash, but Roberts also merged and the two vehicles hit.

Sharma and his passenger, Rama Sharma, 60, of Kingsport, were both injured and taken to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Roberts was also injured and was taken to Holston Valley.

According to the report, Roberts was charged with driving under the influence-second offense, two counts of reckless aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

Three people were injured on Wednesday night when a car traveling east in the west bound lanes of I-26 collided head on with another car.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said a PT Cruiser traveling the wrong direction near exit 4 struck a Lexus.

The Driver of the PT Cruiser was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the Lexus and one passenger were also transported with unspecified injuries.

The Kingsport Police Department, Kingsport Fire Department and Kingsport Life Saving Crew also worked the crash.

The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
